Crowding In Private Capital for Inclusive Growth

Invest In Haiti is a private equity firm focused on deploying capital into the sectors with the highest potential for inclusive growth. In a country where 60 percent of GDP is generated by the informal sector and 78 percent of firms in Port-au-Prince remain credit-constrained, we see not just unmet need but extraordinary opportunity for investors willing to take a long-term, strategic view.

Our investment thesis is grounded in rigorous analysis of Haiti's structural advantages: duty-free access to the US market through the HOPE and HELP Acts, a young and growing population of over 11 million, proximity to US supply chains driving the nearshoring trend, and a wave of decentralization and digital innovation creating market openings in energy, water, and financial services. We partner with local operators and diaspora investors to build enterprises that deliver strong returns while creating jobs and expanding access to essential services.

Strategic Investment Sectors

Apparel & Light Manufacturing

Haiti's largest formal employer with 53,000 workers and 82% of goods exports. Duty-free US access via HOPE/HELP Acts, competitive labor costs, and the global nearshoring trend create significant expansion potential in garments, textiles, and PPE production.

Renewable Energy & Electrification

Less than 40% of Haitians have access to electricity and 93% of firms rely on generators. Private-led minigrids, solar home systems, and PayGo solutions are expanding rapidly, driven by falling technology costs and the 2006 Decentralization Law.

SME Finance & Digital Financial Services

Domestic credit to the private sector stands at just 10.4% of GDP versus the 55.7% regional average. With 60% of adults using mobile phones but only 5% holding e-money accounts, mobile wallets, nano-lending, and digital payments represent a massive untapped market.

Water Infrastructure & Services

The Port-au-Prince metropolitan water market alone was valued at $66.3 million in 2016. Since decentralization in 2009, PPP models including affermage contracts have proven successful, and public investment in new infrastructure is creating openings for private operators.

Agriculture & Agribusiness

Haiti has a latent comparative advantage in agriculture, yet post-harvest infrastructure gaps limit export capacity. We invest in cacao, coffee, and mango processing, connecting smallholder farmers to global markets through modern agro-processing and cold-chain logistics.

Digital network connections and telecommunications infrastructure

Digital Infrastructure & Connectivity

Haiti has the lowest mobile penetration (63%), fixed internet (1%), and 4G coverage (0%) in the Caribbean. With 86% of firms using telephones for business, investment in broadband backbone, mobile networks, and shared infrastructure can unlock the entire digital economy.

Why Haiti?

  • Duty-free, quota-based access to the US market through the HOPE/HELP Acts and CBTPA, with significant unused quota capacity available for immediate expansion
  • Young and growing population of over 11 million with a median age of 24, representing a rapidly expanding workforce and consumer base
  • Strategic proximity to the US at just 700 miles from Miami, positioning Haiti as a prime nearshoring destination as global supply chains restructure away from Asia
  • Government incentives including tax holidays, free trade zones, and special economic zones with streamlined investment approval and industrial infrastructure
  • Decentralization reforms in energy (2006) and water (2009) have opened the market for private-led minigrids, PPPs, and affermage contracts outside Port-au-Prince
  • A global diaspora of over 2 million generating $3.8 billion in annual remittances, creating distribution channels for digital financial services and investment capital

Scaling Off-Grid Energy Access in Rural Haiti

In 2020, Invest In Haiti led an investment in a portfolio of private-led solar minigrids across Haiti's Nord and Artibonite departments. Following the Anchor-Business-Consumer model pioneered at the Caracol Industrial Park, each minigrid was designed to serve an anchor commercial customer alongside hundreds of residential connections, ensuring financial viability from day one.

Within three years, the portfolio expanded to serve over 8,000 households and 120 small businesses that had never been connected to the national grid. Operators integrated mobile money payments for billing, achieving a 94% collection rate. The model proved that private capital can deliver reliable electricity at tariffs below the cost of diesel generation while generating strong investor returns in one of the world's most challenging operating environments.
